Decorate To Look Just Like Fancy Gingerbread Cookies Or Leave Plain & Hang With Decorative Ribbon

Make long-lasting, fragrant ornaments that resemble gingerbread with this easy recipe.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups ground cinnamon (plus more for dusting)
1 cup applesauce (plus more if needed)
1/4 cup white craft glue
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Directions:

  • First mix spices together and then add the applesauce and glue.
  • Pull out dough from bowl and knead on a sheet of wax paper until dough is smooth. If it’s too dry and crumbly, add 1 tablespoon of applesauce at a time until dough holds together and is smooth. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside for about an hour.
  • After dough has rested, flatten it between sheets of waxed paper and roll out until it’s about 1/4″ thick. If dough starts to crack or becomes too dry at this point, spray with a bit of water. If it’s too sticky, sprinkle with cinnamon.
  • Cut dough into desired shapes with cookie cutters (dip in flour first to help prevent dough sticking). You can custom make your own shapes, see this page for templates and tutorials.
  • Make a hole for hanging at the top of each ornament using a plastic straw or pencil (about 1/4″ from edge).
  • Lay pieces on a sheet of waxed paper and allow to air dry (will take up to a week). Flip pieces 2 or 3 times a day so they dry flat and evenly.
  • Once they’re completely dry, decorate with glitter, beads, buttons, white texture paint…whatever you like!
  • Hang with decorative ribbon, yarn, twine or string.

Tip: Wrap each ornament well with tissue paper when storing away until next season, these will last for years and still smell quite fragrant!

Note: These smell wonderful but keep in mind they’re not edible ;) .
